Modesty Patrols in the Ultra Orthodox Enclave of Jerusalem"
with Dr.Motti Inbari, UNC Pembroke

Because Israel's ultra Orthodox sect, Neturei Karta, rejects Zionism, the NK is embraced by Palestinians who also reject the existence of the Jewish state. From 1938-1974 the NK led  Modesty Partrols in Mea Shearim, Jerusalem, in order to strengthen the Haredi enclave and separate it from secular Jerusalem. This lecture examines the modesty campaigns and the  Neturei Karta sect.

JCC Prophets Series- Miriam, Deborah & Huldah (AP)

"And the women dancing with their timbrels”
Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron
Deborah, judge and prophetess
Huldah, the prophetess

These women, like their male counterparts, served as prophets in Israel. That is, they spoke to the people with the words of God.  Each served at a crucial juncture in the developing history of the people. Each was revered in her time. And yet, while we know, read and quote Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah, we are largely silent when it comes to Miriam, Deborah and Huldah.

Come and learn about these amazing women in this 3 week class and the part they played in turning a wandering group of shepherds into the People Israel, the Jews.
Class Dates: Tuesday,  12/4, 12/11, & 12/18

HISTORY OF JEWS IN THE SOUTH

Shalom Y’all.  Jews have lived in the Southern United States since before there was a United States and have continued to move here ever since. Some came as merchants with packs on their backs and started “Jew stores”. Some came as migrants from South America fleeing persecution and created thriving communities in which they prospered economically and socially. Today, we have large American Jewish centers in many southern cities including Raleigh North Carolina.  How did they get here? Why do they come? What did they do when they got here? What was it like to be a Jew in the South? Let’s take a Jewish journey down Southern roads and byways and discover together a piece of American history we probably didn’t learn in school. Series taught by Deborah Goldstein
